What is forensic duplication

A Forensic Duplicate is a file that contains every bit of information from the source in a raw bit stream format.

Source write blocker

Holmes 221B works as a hardware Write Blocker when source hard drive is connected to a computer through USB 3.0 port. It can intercept and prevent (or ‘block’) any modifying command operation from ever reaching the source hard drive. No data will be changed when you read the source hard drive from a computer.

HPA/DCO duplication and removal

Besides data duplication, Holmes 221B also supports HPA (Host Protected Area)& DCO (Device configuration overlay) duplication and removal. It makes sure you have an identical hard drive as the original.

User friendly interface & high copy seed

Ultra-fast duplication speed up to 300MB/s.

Six Data Erase Modes Keep from the Leakage of Confidential Data

When manufacturers/maintenance and repair shops need to reuse hard drives, this is an ideal function to erase data based on different level of secrecy.
  • Quick Erase: Erase the index of a hard drive within a few seconds.
  • Full Erase: Erase the data from a hard drive by overwriting each sector which is able to read/write data.
  • DoD Erase (3pass DoD): Erase HDD 3 times complying with the 5220.22-M data erase security standard of the U.S. Department of Defense.

  • DoD Erase (7pass DoD): Erase HDD 7 times complying with the 5220.22-M ECE data erase security standard of the U.S. Department of Defense to ensure the data is unable to be recovered.
  • Secure Erase: According to National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) 800-88 Guidelines for Media Sanitization, Secure Erase is one of the ATA command. The data is totally and securely wiped from hard drives after implementation, and most of SATA hard drives on the market support Secure Erase.
  • Enhanced Secure Erase: Erase data by using SSD's built-in ATA command. Additional actions will be executed according to different design of hard drives, e.g., destroying the encryption key on SSD to make the data unable to be decoded.

Federal Rules of Evidence (FRE) 1002 and 1003 state that the item or information presented in court must be the original. If data are stored in a computer or similar device, any printout or other output readable by sight, shown to reflect the data accurately, is an original. These rules allow the use of forensic duplicates of computer hard drive as evidence.
